Hunter Bathroom Fan Model 90058 : Hunter 90058 Bathroom Fan & Light Imperial Bronze Saturn
I have been postponing the fan replacement "joy" in our medium sized bathroom for as long as I could... I knew what to expect: cutting into drywall, disconnecting/removing the old fan, installing the new one and patching the ceiling, etc. I was looking for the fan that had a non-traditional look, matched our bronze lighting and had only two switchable functions: light and fan (to match our existing wiring). After extensive homework I zoomed into this model.
I am not going to repeat what others have said. Just a few things that "hit home" with me:
CEILING OPENING: The required drywall opening for the housing of this fan is only about 8in by 8.5in, much smaller than my old fan. I had to use the drywall saw to cut two 8.5in-wide pieces of drywall on both sides of existing fan - from the old fan to the joist. That made the removal of the old fan and installation of the new one much easier, since my fan had to be mounted between the joists witht he help of (included) brackets.
INSTRUCTIONS: The instructions that came with fan were somewhat "cryptic", to put it mildly. It contained only graphic diagrams with no customary (user friendly) descriptions. I guess, there was an attempt to save on paper: no need to print English, Spanish, etc. copies... Although it was OK for me, you might be much happier with instructions that are available on the manufacturer website ([...] search for model 90058). They do contain both diagrams and directions in both English and Spanish.
INSTALLATION TIPS: Since I was worried about matching my knock-down drywall texture after the fan replacement, I was careful with cutting out the piecs of existing drywall. I ended hanging them back and patching just along the cutting seam. Also, I found it easier to screw in a wide strip of of wood (or two thinner ones) across the drywall opening: it gave me the needed support of the fan housing flush with the drywall while drilling the screw holes [in the joists] for the mounting brackets.
AMAZON.COM TO THE RESCUE: After I've installed the housing and opened the rest of the package... I discovered that the glass fixture dome (light cover) was broken! Since it was packaged in a separate styrofoam enclosure it must have been the factory packaging issue (thus 4/5 of the stars). You might want to check all parts before you start, if you want to do it all in one weekend. To make it short, Amazon.com shipped me a replacement fan promptly and I was able to complete my project. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Amazon.com!
And finally, if I can do it - you can do it! :)
